National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives Issues Statement on the Allegations in the NYC Disability Case

On January 14, 2014, the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives (NOSSCR) issued a press release and statement which condemned the actions alleged in the NYC disability case.

According to the NOSSCR, last week a group of approximately 100 former police officers, firefighters and others were indicted in New York City on allegations of fraudulently obtaining Social Security Disability insurance benefits. News reporters are describing this matter as a coordinated effort over a long period of time. These allegations are very troubling and are likely to incur close scrutiny by the Social Security Administration and law enforcement accordingly.

In its statement, the NOSSCR said that the organization condemns any misuse of Social Security Disability programs and it said that if true, the allegations are beyond reprehensible. The NOSSCR contends that any individual that abuses the Social Security Disability programs does so at the expense of millions of Americans who suffer from significant disabilities and severe illnesses who receive benefits appropriately, and for whom these benefits are a vital lifeline. The NOSSCR's statement said that these individuals should be brought to justice.

While the Social Security Administration works diligently to preserve program integrity, it requires adequate resources to accomplish these efforts. Unfortunately, the organization has been deprived of the administrative resources it requires to conduct necessary measures to maintain program integrity for several years. Congress must provide the SSA with sufficient administrative resources to ensure that benefits are being paid to the right people, at the right time and in the right amount. Congress must also provide the SSA with sufficient resources to implement the array of safeguards that already exist in our current laws.
